Your thermostat measures temperature. It does not tell the whole comfort story.
Massachusetts homes can get very dry in winter and excessively humid in warmer weather. Basements and crawlspaces may behave differently from occupied floors. We measure first, review the home and HVAC system, then recommend equipment only when findings support it.

A Professionally Installed Option
Many homeowners assume dry winter air is part of heating season or reach for a portable dehumidifier when a basement feels damp because they do not know professionally installed systems exist.
Whole-home and permanently installed systems can serve a basement, crawlspace, larger area or the whole home. The right approach determines where the problem happens, when it happens and how much moisture must be added or removed. The distinction is treated area, permanent installation and automatic operation—not that portable equipment is ineffective.
Dry and Damp Conditions
Cold outdoor air holds little moisture. When it enters and is heated, relative humidity drops; leakage, ventilation, occupancy and heating configuration all play a role. Static electricity, dry-feeling air or changes in woodwork are reasons for assessment, but do not determine equipment or settings on their own. Too much winter humidification can cause condensation on cold windows or surfaces.
Excess humidity may appear as damp-feeling air, musty odors, condensation or elevated readings. A dehumidifier removes water vapor but does not prove why moisture developed or correct every water source. Intermittent seepage may not be visible during a dry visit, so we combine readings, visible conditions, HVAC operation and the homeowner's history.

A typical Humidity Assessment takes about 60–90 minutes. We ask what you have experienced, where it happens and whether it changes by season or weather; then review HVAC conditions, system size and airflow and take humidity and material-moisture readings where appropriate.

Whole-Home Humidification and Dehumidification
Capacity, location, HVAC compatibility, drainage, controls and service access determine the right approach.
A professionally installed humidifier adds controlled moisture when the air is too dry. Selection depends on the home, location, electrical requirements, water supply, drainage and required output.
617 generally prefers steam humidification using the AprilAire 865 and its dedicated fan pack. It distributes humidity independently of the central duct system, which in our field experience has performed better during seasonal transitions and periods when the central system runs less often.
A professional dehumidifier measures indoor humidity and removes moisture above its setpoint. AprilAire equipment can serve basements, crawlspaces or higher-capacity whole-home applications.
A dehumidifier may run independently in a basement or connect to HVAC ductwork when appropriate. Selection follows treated area, moisture load, location, airflow and removal capacity.
We design permanent drainage whenever practical: gravity drainage when the location permits, or a properly installed condensate pump when it does not.

Maintenance and Home Wellness
Humidifiers use water and need manufacturer-directed maintenance. Steam humidifiers may require canister service; dehumidifier filters and drains need periodic attention.
Persistent dry-air concerns during heating season are a reason to measure the home's humidity. The recommendation also depends on outdoor conditions, the building enclosure and condensation risk.
Damp-feeling air, musty odors, condensation and elevated humidity or material-moisture readings may justify dehumidification. An assessment determines the treatment area and required capacity.
EPA guidance generally recommends indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50% when conditions permit. Winter targets may need to be lower in very cold weather to avoid condensation.
